For years, the Winston-Salem Police Department had several locations throughout the city for storing evidence. When a certain piece of evidence was needed, the process to gather it was very cumbersome and time consuming. With the purchase of an old Thomasville Furniture warehouse near downtown, the police department was able to consolidate all of their evidence and other storage needs under one roof. Six Spacesaver mobile shelving systems were installed in multiple areas of the facility including: DNA storage, Non-DNA storage, Gun Storage, Drug Vault, and File storage. The result is a consolidated solution that provides secure, efficient, and effective storage. These mobile systems provide ample room to store all the different types of “stuff” they have now and also allow for plenty of room to grow.
So what happens if all of these mobile systems get full? During our tour Pat Burke, Evidence Management Supervisor for the Winston-Salem PD, pointed out that plans have already been drawn up for new storage systems and showed us the areas where they could go. “But for now, we have more than enough storage to meet our needs.” Pat said. “We feel secure knowing that our future storage needs have been addressed, and we won’t have to worry about storage space for a very long time.”
